Committee Members

  • Second Tribal Sheriff Jesse Winters - is the 2025 Taos Pueblo Tribal Government official appointee.
  • Horacio Trujillo - A descendant of the historic encounter between the native peoples of Taos and Spanish colonials who grew up playing in community spaces that welcomed children and families in the Plaza district, including the park, the pool, Parr Field and the Plaza itself, Horacio considers it a privilege to support the community in thinking through how a new name for the park can signal a commitment to its being a truly vibrant space for community recreation and gathering. Horacio brings to this effort his wide-ranging experience as a professor of and advisor on efforts to advance socioeconomic development throughout the world, including of particular relevance to the committee’s work supporting communities coping with and recovering from historic periods of violent conflict.
  • Sylvia Rodriguez - is a native Taoseña, professor emerita of anthropology and former director of the Alfonso A. Ortiz Center for Intercultural Studies at the University of New Mexico. Her writings deal with interethnic relations in the Upper Rio Grande Valley, including the impact of tourism on ethnic identity; ritual and place; and conflict over land and water. She currently focuses on the anthropology and politics of water, and collaborates with acequia organizations and researchers around issues of sustainability and resilience. She is a commissioner on the Acequia de San Antonio in Valdez and a member of the Taos Valley Acequia Association board of directors.
  • Peggy Nelson - arrived in New Mexico in 1973 after graduation from law school, to work for legal aid. During her time as an attorney she worked for legal aid, the community law center, and was contract public defender for Taos County. In 198 she was appointed District Judge, retired in 2006, and since has been active in various non-profit organizations and projects in northern New Mexico.
  • George A. "Fritz" Hahn - DOB 2/3/50 and is married to Margretina N. "Tina" Hawley Hahn for 52 years with two sons & three grandchildren. He has been a resident of Taos since 1982 and helped to start Taos Herb Co. MA in Social Work - Community Organization.  He was a Taos Town Councilor from 2014 - 2022 and Acequia Commissioner, Mayordomo, Parciante and volunteer 1982-1983; 2014 through present.
  • Genevieve Oswald, Town of Taos Council Member - serves as the Chair of the Kit Carson Park Renaming Committee (KCPRC), a role she passionately embraces in her commitment to ensure the park’s renaming process is culturally respectful, inclusive, and reflective of the diverse perspectives in Taos. Under her leadership, the committee works to gather community input, engage with key stakeholders, and explore the historical and ethical considerations surrounding the renaming. Genevieve is dedicated to creating a space for meaningful dialogue, aiming to elevate the values tied to the community’s legacy while considering the future vision of the park. Her work on the KCPRC is part of her broader efforts to foster a stronger, more connected Taos, where everyone feels heard and valued.

Committee Meetings

Scheduled tentatively for the 4th Thursday of the month at 3:30 pm. 

Next meeting scheduled for Wednesday the 23rd of July at 3:30 pm in the Town Council Chambers.
