Lead Free Taos Overview
The water the Town of Taos provides to homes and businesses is lead-free. However, clean water can come in contact with lead as it flows through the service lines, pipes, and plumbing in and around your home. Lead Free Taos is part of a nationwide EPA program and a statewide New Mexico Environment Department program to inventory all water service lines, identify those that are lead, and replace all lead service lines.
Though initial conversations with plumbers and water operators with knowledge and experience going back to the 1930's would indicate there are no lead service lines in Taos, the EPA and NMED require the Town of Taos to prove Taos is lead-free through an evidence based approach.
The Town of Taos is meeting these requirements by:
- Completing an inventory of water service lines
- Analyzing property records for construction dates
- Inspecting service lines at the meter can to determine service line materials
- Asking customers to complete home surveys
- Rolling out a water testing program for schools and daycares
Should a lead service line be discovered, the Town of Taos will seek funding to replace the Town's lead service lines.
This work will ensure the Town of Taos water system is lead-free.
